There was a threat of rain Saturday night, but it didn’t stop a good number of bluegrass fans from attending our Groundhog Day Show at the Santa Ynez Valley Grange Hall in downtown Los Olivos. We honored the ground hog with a foot-tall stuffed example (battery-operated), dug up by bassist Tom Lee and stuck in front of the main microphone all night. Peter brought along a fretless banjo, made by Frank Proffitt of Reese, NC. It sported a groundhog skin head which, as Frank told Peter in 1961, “is almost as good as cat skin for a banjer head.” Peter, of course, performed a solo version Groundhog, learned from a version by Vester Jones of Carrol County, Virginia. The Very Lonesome Boys were joined by Ms. Francine, who sang a couple of her own songs and helped out with Jesse James to round out the evening.
