\nSACRED HARP SING for the Santa Barbara area

Santa Barbara-area singers are warmly invited to take part in an evening
\nof Sacred Harp singing on Saturday, November 17, hosted by the Santa
\nBarbara-area shape-note singing group.<\/p>\n
The session will be held in the Parish Hall at All Saints-by-the-Sea
\nEpiscopal Church (83 Eucalyptus Lane, just south of the freeway off the
\nSan Ysidro Road exit; the parish hall is behind the sanctuary, on the left
\nside of the street).<\/p>\n
We will begin with snacks at 6:30 p.m., and the music will get going
\naround 7 o’clock. We’ll sing for about two hours, including the
\ntraditional (and yummy!) dessert break.<\/p>\n
What is “Sacred Harp” or “shape-note” singing, you ask? It’s a fun,
\nrugged, uniquely American style of folk hymnody that originated in the New
\nEngland colonies but has survived to its present-day revival mostly in
\nAppalachia and in the South. It uses a special system of note shapes
\n(hence, “shape note”) that is fairly easy to learn or to ignore, if you
\nneed to! Typical hymnbooks are “The Southern Harmony” or “The Sacred
\nHarp,” which we use in its 1991 edition. Books will be available to borrow
\nor buy at the sing.<\/p>\n
We are expecting singers from the wider Santa Barbara area as well as
\nvisitors from throughout Southern California — come join us for a great
\ntime!<\/p>\n
