There\u00a0was\u00a0a\u00a0threat\u00a0of\u00a0rain\u00a0Saturday\u00a0night,\u00a0but\u00a0it\u00a0didn’t\u00a0stop\u00a0a\u00a0good number of bluegrass fans from attending our\u00a0Groundhog Day Show<\/strong>\u00a0at the Santa Ynez\u00a0Valley Grange Hall in downtown Los\u00a0Olivos. \u00a0We honored the ground hog with a\u00a0foot-tall stuffed example (battery-operated), dug up by bassist Tom Lee<\/strong>\u00a0and stuck in front\u00a0of the main microphone all night. \u00a0Peter brought along a fretless banjo, made by Frank\u00a0Proffitt<\/strong>\u00a0of Reese, NC. \u00a0It sported a\u00a0groundhog skin head which, as Frank told\u00a0Peter in 1961, “is almost as good as cat skin for a banjer head.” \u00a0Peter, of course,\u00a0performed a solo version Groundhog, <\/em>learned from a version by Vester Jones of\u00a0Carrol County, Virginia. \u00a0The Very Lonesome Boys<\/a><\/strong> were\u00a0joined\u00a0by\u00a0Ms. Francine<\/a><\/strong>, who sang a couple of her own songs and helped out with Jesse James<\/em>\u00a0to round out the evening.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
